Eric Clapton Unplugged

One of the greatest guitarists ever to pick up the instrument is legendary rock and blues star Eric Clapton.

From the Yardbirds and Cream, through the Bluesbreakers and Derek and the Dominos, and finally a superstar solo career, Clapton has consistently proved his brilliance.

His life has been dogged by troubles - drugs and the tragic death of his young child - but his music and courage make him an ever-popular performer.

Clapton also led the way with acoustic concerts - unpluggeds as they have become known - and his Unplugged is the pioneering, smoky wine bar-style, personal concert, even if it wasn't the first.

It is easy to see why so many other artists followed the style as it gives them a chance to show off their playing, singing and performance skills in front of a small, knowledgeable crowd for, in many cases, the first time in years.

Eric Clapton Unplugged is, as you would expect, very blues-oriented, with Before You Accuse Me, Hey Hey, Nobody Knows You When You're Down, sliding on down very nicely.

It also has a quiet mix of ballads such as Tears in Heaven, Lonely Stranger and a wonderfully laidback version of the rock classic Layla.

It is hard to watch the track Tears in Heaven, written after the death of his young one, without getting a lump in the throat and thinking just how brave is this bloke to be able to perform such a painful tribute without breaking down.

Backing the maestro are Ray Cooper (percussion), Nathan East (bass guitar/backing vocals), Steve Ferrone (drums), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Andy Fairweather Low (guitar), Katie Kissoon (backing vocals), Tessa Niles (backing vocals).

Eric Clapton Unplugged may have been one of the first, but boy, do all others have a lot to match when they release their own acoustic concerts. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.

Conclusion: Rating: 90%
