The
man can talk, and not just warble on about anything, but also grip you
with the most insane – usually a bit uncouth – of stories.
In many ways, the Q&A’S that the filmmaker – famous for
his juvenile but beloved comedies like Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
– conducts (and accordingly records for these DVDs) are more
entertaining than his movies. They really are. You seriously hate to
take a toilet break from it. And the crowd loves him. They’ll
line up until their legs give up to ask the man a question. In an Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder,
Smith travels to both England and Canada to speak to a theatre-full of
chronic fans. Characteristically, he’s on stage for about two
hours at both venues, but only manages to fit in about six or seven
questions – because each of his answers is the equivalent of a
tax return. He loves to blather…. But how we love to listen to
it. Smith is genuinely funny, and for the most part, seems to also know
what he’s talking about. He may across as brash and a bit haughty
at times, but he’s obviously quite an intelligent fellow. This
time, he answers questions on such topics as: His favourite and least
favourite movies of the year (deciding to dissect all of friend, Ben
Affleck’s movies), whether there’s any truth to the rumours
that he’s involved in a Star Wars
TV series (which sets him off on a tangent about the internet), he
tells the London crowd about the time he came to blows with a newspaper
covering the Jersey Girl
premiere, and also, much to her apparent abhor, speaks about the
“night swimming” that he and his wife get up to in the
bedroom. On both occasions, his regular cinematic cohort Jason
‘Jay’ Mewes, who does little but mumble and ogle the women
in the audience – yet the audience still go crazy for him, joins
him on stage. EXTRAS
Hours and hours of side-splitting entertainment – encompassing a couple
of good extras, including a piece where Jason Mewes hits the streets to
try his ‘come on’ lines on the locals – for the Jay & Silent Bob
fans.
