We all know the historic story of Family Guy
by now (you know, the whole "Axed, then recommissioned because Fox made
a wad of cash the size of Casey Donavon's lunch box from the DVD sales"
tale), so at this point of the game - you either love or loathe this
warped cartoon comedy.
For many, Family Guy is a rip-off of The Simpsons and South Park.
For others - it's cutting edge absurdity at it's best. And for some,
it's just down right offensive. Thankfully - it's a mixture of all
these strains of thoughts that makes Seth McFarlene's creation such an
enjoyable 24 minutes of TV.
There's nothing really new on offer
throughout the sixth season, which is in no way a bad thing. The jokes
are still as sharp and twisted than ever, there are more pop culture
references than you can poke a stick at, and most importantly - the
laughs still come in thick and fast.
There are far to many highlights to point out - from a 'we were all thinking it' take on the Jenifer Love Hewitt series Ghost Whisperer, to the revelations of a gay Star Trek member,
the utterly graphic murder of Fran "The Nanny" Dresher in a microwave
or even the theme song given to everyone's favourite sex fiend Quagmire
- there are laughs a plenty.
Those who may critise the show for
it's stupidity (it does seem at times, particularly in the middle
of this season, that the writers are going to rather extreme
length to continually up the ante on controversy each episode) - are
really missing the point of this clever little cult phenomenon. The
show is fueled by clever stupidity, which makes it such a great thing
to switch you brain off to after a hard day at work.
If you're
after hard hitting satire - this isn't the place. But if you're after
some high quality "It's wrong, but it's so damn funny" laughs, then
you'll be more than happy with this sitting on your DVD shelf.
EXTRAS
There is yet to be a disappointing lot of extras on any of the Family Guy releases thus far, and Season 6
is no different with a whopping 38 deleted scenes - as well as
commentary (and decent ones at that, none of this junk where the
creators just sit and watch the eps) on every single episode. Not to
shabby if you ask me.
There's also 3 animatic episodes, a few
easter eggs as well as 2 featurettes (the best of which takes a look at
the surprisingly interesting world of the Family Guy toys and merchandise).
It may not be The Simpsons, but it's sure gives it a run for it's money. Conclusion:
Movie 75% Extras: 60%
