Family Ties :
The First Season

Review by Sean Lynch

My first memories of Family Ties date back towards the end of the shows seven year run, when the show was fueled by storylines surrounding the newest cast member in the blonde haired "Andy".

So it's somewhat of a nostalgic treat to revisit this classic series in a form of which I was never quite aware of. The original, and arguably, the best series.

Family Ties

It's truly astonishing to revisit a series like this, one which holds such strong memories in your mind. And more often than not, when you watch them again decades later - you soon come to realise that they aren't actually as good as the fuzzy memories make you believe.

Oddly, despite Family Ties heavy 80s influences (the Regan era, free love in the 70s, the lure of Wall Street), the opening series of the show holds up incredibly well.

For those who missed out on one of the most classic era's of TV comedies (in which shows such as Cheers, The Cosby Show, Perfect Strangers and Family Ties ruled the airwaves) the show follows what happens when do-gooder, ex-hippie parents find themselves in the Reagan-Era Midwest with a radically conservative son and an obsessed shopper for a daughter.

Of course, the real strength of the show (which is obvious from the very first scene of the Pilot episode) is Michael J Fox. While most know him for his turns in Back To The Future and Spin City - it's Alex P Keaton which set this pint sized star into the bigtime. Every comedic and dramatic beat is so perfectly timed by Fox, lifting the series out of the 'just another sitcom' barrel and into a class of its very own.

Apparently this is one of the 'most requested' TV series to make the cross over onto DVD. Whether thats true or not remains to be seen - but I can say this - its certainly worthy of such praise. Family Ties is a true classic in every sense of the word.

EXTRAS

Sadly, there is nothing at all on offer here. Surely a restrospective set of interviews, bloopers or something must have been floating around in the vaults?

Perhaps they are being held over for later releases...

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras: N/A
