Fargo

Life wasn't meant to be easy and for the characters of this hugely black comedy it certainly isn't.

Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is a weak, wimpy car salesman who is having desperate trouble with money.

He's in debt up to his eyeballs, his rich dad-in-law thinks he's pathetic, and so he comes up with an easy plan to end his problems - he'll have his wife kidnapped and will steal the ransom money.

To commit the deed he hires two professionals in the forms of Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare, who set out to earn their money almost immediately.

Unfortunately, for everyone, things go wrong and blood starts being spilt. Lots and lots of blood.

So, small town police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) puts on her oversized parka and trudges her heavily pregnant body through the snows to try to solve the crimes.

Fargo is a must-see movie as it is one of the funniest, blood spattering efforts to have been made.

The humour is utterly wicked and, in some cases, only for the sick of mind.

The cast, headed by Oscar-winner McDormand, is perfect and the usually wussy roles Macy gets are made to look positively gutsy by Jerry's efforts.

Fargo's wonderful photography has been extremely well transferred on to disc with only very minor aliasing problems. Sound-wise this is fine, despite the hard-to-follow Minnesota accents.

This is a must for any self-respecting film buff's home library.

Conclusion: 90% Extras: 65%.
