The Fast and the Furious is set in Los Angeles amid
the illegal street-racing community and focuses on an undercover
cop Brian (Paul Walker) who tries to infiltrate a gang believed
to be responsible for a series of truck hijackings.
The leader of the gang is a hardman by the name of Dominic
Turetto (Vin Diesel) who is leery of strangers, but does have
a very scrumptious sister (Jordana Brewster).
Our hero is finding it very hard to crack into the gang until
one day he manages to impress Dominic with a display of loyalty
that he can't avoid giving credit for.
However, getting into the close-knit group is easier than
being accepted by his fellow racers and he has to face aggro
from the more suspicious of them.
The racing action is pretty good, without being ground-breaking,
although I have to say the way the cars - fired up with NOS
something-or-rather - zoomed away with near-jet propulsion
had me smirking. The camerawork of those moments - superfast
and shaky - did little for me.
Anyway, the best thing about The Fast and the Furious
is Vin Diesel, who really impressed with the way he treated
his role. It could have been just another tough-guy part,
but Diesel (an underrated actor) gives it so much more breadth
and deep with a very strong performance.
Walker, Bewster and the others are fine, but don't really
have a lot to work with.
The video transfer is very, very good and there can be no
doubt about the fact that this is damn fine-looking DVD. The
sound is better yet and will have your system working overtime.
If you are male (under 20), or a petrolhead, you'll really
like this. There are sensational looking cars, a street-revolution
attitude and wild music to bang your head to.
Others will find it watchable, without being memorable.
Conclusion: Movie 70%, Extras 80%
