Flight of the Phoenix

Review by James Anthony

Oh here's a bit of good gritty adventure, courtesy of the sands of the Gobi Desert, where a planeload of oil workers gets caught in a storm over Mongolia and crash goodness-knows where.

The initial survivors need to make some hard choices and do it quickly as they have limited amounts of food and water and because they were blown so far from their flight path it may takes weeks for a rescue group to locate them.

If, that is, they can.

Flight of the Phoenix

Heading the group is the boss man and pilot Frank Towns (Dennis Quaid) who is a bit of a hard-line company man and is not the most popular guy at present because he shut down the operation.

His main protagonist is Kelly (Miranda Otto) who is a feisty gal ready to always put her two cents in during decision making.

Another is the strangely quiet Elliott (Giovanni Ribisi) who designs planes and reckons he is the only guy who can save them - by using the remnants of the aircraft to build something with which to fly out of their predicament. His plan is a true rising of a phoenix!

As you would expect in a situation like this there is high-tension between the group although they do end up taking Elliott's advice and instead of conserving supplies use them up more quickly to feed the energy they are using to build the plane.

Flight of the Phoenix has been criticised as not being a patch on the 1965 original, but it is still a very watchable film. It has plenty of exciting adventure, a bit of violence and the inter-group problems that make it work on a number of levels.

The acting is fine and you do keep your fingers crossed for most in the party that they will manage to live long enough to see if the plane actually does get off the ground - and then not fall out of the sky after that. Flight of the Phoenix is not a must-see movie, but it is good viewing.

Hey, just go along for the ride.
