He thinks his flight may be made all the more palatable by
having the very attractive Sarah (Sandra Bullock) in the seat
next to him, until she begins to check out his half-written
(and boring) vows.
Fortunately, he's saved from having to be rude to her by
a plane crash, which not only destroys his timetable, but
sets in train a series of semi-disasters on the road to Savannah.
They include falling unwittingly in with a drug dealer, getting
on a wrong train, hopping aboard a pensioner bus, getting
stuck in a hurricane, a fire, almost being squashed by a tree
and bumping into the bridesmaid and best man at a motel.
The road trip and the personal journeys of both Ben and Sarah
are intertwined and the obvious attraction they have for each
other - and fun times, despite adversity - leads him to start
questioning his desire to marry his really nice fiancee (Maura
Tierney).
Feted as being "this year's most riotous road trip", the
PR firm obviously never watched Forces of Nature. It
has its moments of slapstick and farce but, in general, is
a nicely weighted look at a nervous groom-to-be and a chaotic,
fun-loving free spirit.
Affleck is very good as the main man and he plays his part
in a reasonably straight, understated way. Bullock, as charming,
loveable and annoying as ever, steals scenes all over the
place but she is in her romantic-comedy element.
The sound and video transfer is acceptable, with only a couple
of barely noticeable image problems, but there is nothing
to ruin what is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.
The big question about Forces of Nature is - will
Ben choose to marry his fiancee, or get involved with Sarah?
Conclusion: Movie 80%, Extras 40%
