The two main stars are Jeremy Irons (Mike) and Meryl Streep.
He plays a scientific man of leisure who gets engaged to the
daughter of a wealthy businessman. She plays Sarah, the woman
of the title, who has been abandonned by a French sailor and
has to live as a companion to an old hag.
Their tale of love is told during the on-screen filming and
the real-life relationship between the already-spoken-for
stars.
It has to be said The French Lieutenant's Woman really draws
you in and while you may, or may not, be interested in the
modern tryst, the tale of the Victorian lovers is enticing.
Irons puts in his best performance (in this reviewer's opinion)
and Streep is just super. It may have been my imagination,
but I reckon sometimes Streep deliberately off-acts as Sarah.
The transfer is - as fans of the movie will have hoped -
almost perfect, with beautiful muted colours in some exceedingly
lovely buildings and landscapes. The sound is clear and dialogue
not hard to understand.
A really good night's entertainment and is very pleasing
on the eyes.
