The Gathering Storm

To most Winston Churchill was the bulldog-like character who led the British Empire in World War Two against the Nazis and showed a never-say-die spirit that kept the last bastion of European democracy free.

He was confident and inspired a courageous defence of Britain - no matter what the cost.

"We shall fight them on the beaches ..."

But just prior to World War Two Churchill was going through a major crisis. He was getting old, being sidelined by his parliamentary colleagues and yet had a sense of destiny that would prove correct.

He also knew in his bones that Adolf Hitler's Germany was a threat to freedom and so took the verbal cudgels to his own Government to re-arm before it was too late.

The Gathering Storm is a superb historical drama that focuses on a great man pushed to his limits and yet still able to keep standing and fighting back.

Albert Finney plays Churchill and, as brilliant as the actor has been in the past, this could well be the role of his life. He looks and definitely sounds like the PM and is as grumpy and cantankerous as you would expect.

He is superbly back by a cast that begins with Vanessa Redgrave as his darling wife Clemmie, through to Linus Roache and Lena Headey who play a couple entwined with the political machinations of the time. Throw in Derek Jacobi as Standley Baldwin and a host of other well-known faces and you have a wonderful ensemble. Oh, and watch out for Ronnie Barker as Churchill's much-put-upon butler.

The photography and scripting are terrific and while the pace is gentle, the storyline is powerful.

Excellent viewing.

Conclusion: 90% Extras: 20%.
