Girl, Interrupted

Now this may be a tough call, but it is such a shame that Girl, Interrupted was not known as Viewer, Interrupted or, more accurately, Viewer (Who Wants to be) Interrupted from this inane, pointless movie.

Winona Ryder is a disturbed teenager in the 1960s who finds herself packed off to a loony bin for being a little too way-out (and having swallowed a bottle full of aspirin washed down with vodka).

There she meets an assorted bunch of similarly disturbed girls in the hospital run by an overbearing, but caring, charge nurse (Whoopi Goldberg) and a psychologist (Vanessa Redgrave).

In to this mix explodes the completely deranged Angelina Jolie (described as seductively captivating, but more apt is selfish, deserves all she gets, pain in the backside), who seems to break out of the security-conscious hospital with more ease than a taxman gets into your money holder.

The senior support cast, Goldberg and Redgrave, do well with the story and script but the others tend to flounder with characters that are either too pathetic or unlikeable for words.

Jolie gets by on haunted energy while Ryder does her best with a character that you really don't tend to know, or want to get to know.

Girl, Interrupted is no One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It is a seriously "who cares" movie that unfortunately interrupted a night that could have been spent watching something far more engaging.

And it runs for more than two hours!

Conclusion: Movie: 70% DVD Extras: 60%
