The Glass House

Review by Julian Dello

Did anyone else find it strange that the Glass House best-of DVD was released at almost the exact same time that the news came through the show was being given the flick?

I like many TV viewers in their late teens to mid twenties, have crossed paths with the Glass House from time to time. And I like most of that bracket live under the assumption that it's a pretty funny show - heck, it has Hughesy on it, it must be ok!

The Glass House

But tuning in recently to the final few episodes I realised that I've alway really, deep down, enjoyed the comedy styling s of Will Anderson and Corinne Grant about as much as living in an apartment that has not doors or windows and contains only 20 suitcases and Andrew O'Keeffe.

I think we can safely say that the axing of the Glass House isn't exactly the tragedy it was made out to be, and most people - like myself - completely forgot that when you actually watch the show, it isn't really that good. It's much like Good News Week  in that I have a pretty strong feeling that I remembered liking it - but when you think about it - it wasn't that good at all.

In fact, The Glass House is essentially GNW without the points system (after all, it is made by the same writing and producing team). It's like no one noticed, and just pushed Paul McDermott out of the middle chair, chucked in Anderson - nudged out Judie McCrossin and gave Grant a chair - and left Hughsey take 'the fat ones' chair. There is still the forced jokes about 'The GST' and 'Howards a C**t' jokes that no one really finds that funny, but laughs anyway because everyone else is and wants to avoid looking stupid because they don't understand satire - and satire is supposed to be a smart man's funny. But satire is shit, it is.

This collection of The Best of The Glass House takes all the 'End of Year Best Of' eps which have aired since 2002 and chucks them all on one DVD. There are some quite funny moments, with some really great guests including Arj Barker, Andrew Denton, Ross Noble, a surprisingly humerous David Koche and pretty much anyone else that has ever visited the Melbourne Comedy Festival. There's some more risque moments that weren't originally aired and some of the better lines that were thrown around (anything with Molly Meldrum always seems to end up with the terms "Elton John" or "Not that sort of Queen cheeky!").It's certainly watchable, and you do get a good amount of gags for your buck.

Ultimately though, The Glass House just wasn't as good as your memory will lead you to remember.

DVD Extras

Not a bad bunch of extras, including a heap of Gag Easter Eggs, the ability to generate random "Tomorrow's Headlines" and an interesting Q&A segment with the cast and crew.

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras: 65%
