The Godfather

Review by Sean Lynch

It's pretty rare for a film to come along and change the face of, not only cinema, but of ethic sterotypes as we now know it.

Let's face it - had Francis Ford Coppola never put this epic set of stories to celluloid, anytime you saw a somewhat portly middle aged Italian man walking down the street wouldn't immediately throw up images of headless horses and gun shot wounds to the face.

Godfather : Part One

Regarded as one of the best films ever by the American Film Institute, taking home a Best Picture Oscar in 1972 (and only recently pipped at the post in a recent IMDB survey by The Dark Knight), Francis Ford Coppola's original epic masterpiece features Marlon Brando in his unforgettable Oscar winning role as the patriarch of the Corleone family.

Violent and chilling as it is beautiful, The Godfather paints a portrait of a Sicilian family's struggle to hold onto the power of the underworld in a post-war America of corruption, deceit and betrayal.

Based on Mario Puzo's best selling novel, this is the film which without a doubt made the careers of Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall - and it's not hard to see why. Every single moment is pure nervous tension, because no matter what is happening on screen, you just know that the threat of death is just around the corner.

While for many The Godfather : Part 2 was the series high point, you simply can't go past the genius pieces of story telling at play here. There is good reason why The Sopranos is the greatest TV show ever made... and it's all thanks to this one movie.

A must have for the DVD shelf - it really is an offer to good to refuse!

DVD EXTRAS

Meticulously restored for the first time, with all-new 5.1 Digital Surround Sound - the single editions of the rereleased Godfather films leave a lot to be desired.

In fact, it's almost criminal how little is included here - essentially forcing lovers of the trilogy to fork out the big bucks for the super chunky Box Set (which is, admittedly, absolutely superb).

Conclusion: Movie 85% Extras: 20%
