Goldmember

As the saying goes - like father, like son. Although in Austin Powers in Goldmember it is more a case of love father, like son.

Why? Well, Austin's dad is Michael Caine and the big screen can never get enough of him. He adds style and class to any movie and in Goldmember he portrays playboy-spy Nigel Powers.

After a sensational out-Bonding James Bond intro, we discover that some brute has kidnapped Powers senior and it is up to our exceptionally randy hero to rescue him.

He tracks his dear old dad down through time travel to a 1970s' disco where its owner is a roller-dancing crazy Dutchman called Goldmember. You see he loves gold and there was a terrible accident in a smelter where his ... thingie ... ended up being ... well ... watch the movie.

Anyway, the rescue bid has Austin pairing up with Foxy Cleopatra, very well played by screen newcomer Beyonce Knowles, and together they get their man. By the way, Powers senior's absolute loathing of the Dutch (God knows why) is exceptionally funny.

From there they must try to foil Dr Evil's latest dastardly plot to take over the world.

Goldmember is by far the cleverest (if you can use that word) of the AP movies with a mass of references to well-known films - some subtle, some not - and it could almost be titled A Tribute to Michael Caine. One thing you have to look at in the deleted scenes is Myers and cast singing Austin to the tune of Alfie - one of Caine's best movies. It is utterly brilliant and I cannot believe it was not included in the movie. Watch it and you'll see why.

And unfortunately, the powers (so to speak) that be decided to keep on with the Mini-Me character, who was fine in AP2 but bloody annoying in this, and didn't allow much screen time for Fat Bastard, arguably the pick of Myers' alter egos.

One of the best things about The Spy Who Shagged Me was Dr Evil so while I'm putting the size-11s in ... I reckon Myers' Dr Evil was a bit uneven in Goldmember and there were times when I almost winced in embarrassment.

And the Goldmember character himself just didn't do it for me. Isn't that weird?

Having said those nasty things, Goldmember does have some exceptionally funny moments - you gotta love the Fooks - and is a lot of fun, just expect a few parts to be patchy.

The video transfer quality is pretty damn good considering the number of extras crammed on to one disc and gives Goldmember a real feel of the horror days of world fashion. The sound is a ripper.

Conclusion: 80% Extras: 80%
