One of the best movies to capture the awkwardness of those
years is Gregory's Girl, by one of the most wonderful directors
around - Bill Forsyth.
His quirky, gentle humour also gave us the exquisite Local
Hero (one of the best movies ever made) and the hilarious
ice cream war of Comfort and Joy.
Gregory's Girl stars Gordon John Sinclair as Gregory. He's
a bit away with the fairies at times and despite his height,
is not one of the world's best soccer forwards.
In fact, he's getting axed from the school team and he, unfortunately
falls in love with his replacement.
No, it's not a guy, but a girl, who's the most talented player
the side has ever had.
So our lad decides to try to win the heart of his girl with
very funny results.
Sinclair is just perfect for his role and is an absolute
delight to watch. Okay there are times when you cringe and
just want to curl up and die from embarrassment for him, but
he bumbles through.
Dee Hepburn never got my blood up (when I was a youngster)
as the girl any young lad would die for, but she does a fine
acting job as the object of desire. She looks pretty good
as a soccer player too - she should play for Manchester United!!!!!
Anyway, keep a lookout for a young Clare Grogan. She's a
bit of a regular in Forsyth movies and grows up to be one
of the most beautiful actresses Britain has ever produced.
Conclusion: 80% Extras: 20%.
