And, from the shuffle became a twitch, then two startled
jumps (at least) and by the time Michael Myers had finished
his rampage of death through Haddonfield, Illinois, I was
in a sweat and jumping at shadows.
Every cupboard, hedgerow or dark corner could have the white-faced
killer standing there, watching your every move until it comes
time to STRIKE. (Aaaagh, scared myself again).
He could strangle you with his hands, a telephone cord or
pin you to the wall with that horrid carving knife.
How good is Carpenter? Here is this guy who produced an independent
movie for $300,000 (it made $50 million), shot it in 20 days,
on a shoestring budget (the crew had to paint leaves brown
to make it look like autumn - and reused them in many scenes)
and the lead actress (Jamie Lee Curtis) was in her first movie.
And, you don't see a lot of blood in Halloween - it's
all in Carpenter's brilliant suspense building - with music
and camera shots - that make it such a chiller.
There have been many follow-up movies that tried to cash
in on the kill-a-teen-after-sex phenomenon, but none ever
came close to the frights Halloween has caused.
Forget Friday the 13th part 967, Nightmare on Elm
St part 7 billion or even the more modern Scream
series. Halloween, the original, is a horror masterpiece.
Worth having in the library - just don't watch it with the
lights out.
Conclusion: Movie 90%, Extras 80%
