Filmed
during the live show phenomenon that was Miley Cyrus’ The Best of Both
Worlds Tour (selling out almost instantly in the states, boosting the
bright eyed daughter of Billy "Achey Breaky Heart" Cyrus into superstar
stratosphere), this feature takes full advantage of the specially
designed, cutting-edge Disney Digital 3-DTM technology.
While
it's certainly going to please the youngsters more-so than the parents,
you simply can't deny the amazing novelty of the 3D on display, even on the DVD version. The
technology works best when the camera pushes through the crowd, with
the thousands of hands waving in the air. It truly feels like your part
of the action - something which I never really imagined was possible.
?
Of course, theres a few obvious 3D moments in which Miley (or her
alter-ego Hannah Montana) points directly at the camera - but
for
the most part, the show works best when you feel like your on the stage
(any shots with the drummer are astoundingly life-like).
Theres
plenty of upbeat songs (and one can only assume with a lounge room full of
young fans, each screening will quickly turn into a sing-a-long),
which are actually more tolerable than most would expect.
Fine - I'll
admit it... there were a few moments of feet tapping! Are you happy
now! (Just don't tell my hard nosed journalistic peers!!).
The inclusion of "The Jonas Brothers" (who are almost as famous for
their vows of celibacy as they are for their music) is just a little too
unsubtle in it's attempt to cross promote another Disney franchise -
but, again, if it keeps the little tykes quiet and smiling it's
probably not such a terrible thing.
Having said that, there are quite a
few off putting moments in between songs in which we meet some of the
fans (toddlers dressed, essentially, as Paris Hilton! Urgghll!) which
is worrying to say the least. These children are our future remember...
our future in lip gloss?
The kiddies will absolutely love it, and at the end of the day - if
you're a good parent, that's all that matters. DVD EXTRAS
There are two ways in which you can experience this kiddie-pop
extravaganza, and it really does come down to personal choice... and
budget.
The old school 2D version (who wants to see things in so
few dimensions anyway... that is sooooo 2007) includes the extras we
all expect from something like this: featurettes ("Music & More:
Sing Along With The Movie") and Backstage videos ("The Ultimate
Personal Tour"). Both are fun, but hardly worth repeat viewing.
The
3D version packs a bit of extra punch, with the obvious inclusion of
the extra dimension - but there are also a few songs tacked on from the
Jonas Brothers (S.O.S) and Miley (Good and Broken).
A
fun little show, and certainly a sign of the sort of things we can
expect from studios in the next few years, with a slew of DVD releases
set to hit the big screen over the coming months.
Conclusion:
Movie 70% Extras: 70%
