There's nothing particularly inventive about
the Hannah Montana
formula. There is, and have been, dozens for 'young sitcoms' which
look, sound and play exactly the same on Nickelodeon, The Disney
Channel or Saturday Morning TV for the last two decades. Shows like California Dreams, That's So
Raven, Saved By The Bell,
USA High
- all the same, all showered in fluro greens and yellows, all cheesy as
hell, all smothered by canned laughter, all made by the same folk.
So what has set Hannah
Montana apart from the rest?
To
be honest - I don't quite know. From an outsiders perspective, I
honestly couldn't tell the difference. Sure, the show is easily
digestible. It's amazingly watchable (but aren't they all) and you
can't help but feel satisfied after watching it. It's easy to watch TV.
But still - how is it different than anything else I've grown up
watching since I was just a tacker?
The best I can work out is that Hannah
Montana
offers a dream & lifestyle that Zac Morris never could. That of
a
double life of a normal school kid, and the dream of being a pop star.
... It also helps that the show sells a sh**load of CD soundtracks.
Pop
Star Profile
offers up four episodes from the TV series which follows a
mild
mannered school girl, Miley Cyrus, and her alter ego, pop star Hannah
Montana. This particular bunch of eps takes us through the "story-arc"
(yep, who said Saturday morning TV doesn't have depth!) of Hannah's
drama when another big star comes onto the scene and shakes
things up. Oh, and of course, he's a "total hotty".
By no means ground breaking stuff, but enjoyable enough. And with the
success of the Hannah Montana 3D
movie - you can only imagine how big the demand for these DVD's will
be. But one question remains...
What's with the star having such a distracting speech impediment?
EXTRAS
Not
to bad here considering there are only four episodes on the disc. You
have to wonder if they will ever release the entire series on DVD or
continue to milk these various "Special" releases over the next few
years.
For what it's worth, there is a short (and
reeeeeeeeeeeallly cheesy) behind-the-scenes featurette entitled "The
Real Miley Cyrus" which gives an insight into the Cyrus family. Cue
lots of 'We have soooooooo much fun on the set, we are all best
friends' and 'I'm the crazy prankster, people are always telling me how
crazy I am'.
There is also a Musical Performance of the song Nobody's Perfect
(which, I'm sorry to say, is darn catchy after a while) mimed to
perfection by young Miley.
You
don't need me to tell you whether it's worth buying or not, because if
you're child is nagging you as we speak - chances are you will be
heading down to the shops in the next few days to get it anyway!
