Their lawyer is the smooth and slimey Frank Malone (Robert
Taylor) who seems to make fairly free and easy with their
freedom - getting them out on bail hearings so they can do
another job - and also with Dale's blonde floozie wife, Carol
(Rachel Griffiths).
Now, old Frank wants to set the boys up with a $20 million
job - robbing the Melbourne Cup - and he's determined to make
it a last big payer (for him) and then drop the brothers right
in it.
Unfortunately for his schemes, the lads are not as dumb as
he takes them for and things don't go exactly according to
the bottom-feeder's plan.
The Hard Word is loosely styled upon a Lock Stock and
Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch-like plotline and it
works very well indeed. There's action, drama and enough humour
to appeal to all tastes.
However it has to be said that it really is the excellent
performances from the cast that really raise this Australian
thriller to terrific heights.
Pearce is superb and Richardson and Edgerton are revelations.
I reckon Griffiths absolutely loved doing her role - which
is definitely not her usual fare. This is a hugely enjoyable
yarn and well worth sitting down to.
Conclusion: Movie 85%, Extras 75%
