In Heist, Hackman plays an ageing thief Joe Moore
who just wants to retire to a warm climate with his gorgeous
wife (Rebecca Pidgeon) and sail the yacht he has just finished
building.
However, his expected last robbery is anything but that when
his fence, a nasty little sod Bergman (Danny DeVito), decides
to steal the takings and blackmail Moore into one final raid.
This time it is heavily guarded Swiss bullion that's up for
grabs and Moore and his gang need to not only get through
some tricky security problems, but also deal with Bergman's
nephew (Sam Rockwell) who is foisted on them.
What follows is an original double-triple-quadruple cross
with more twists and turns than a bent corkscrew. Even this
experienced (and damn good) plot predicterer was hard pressed
to stay ahead of the game.
Anyway, Heist is an entertaining yarn, filled with
good performances and is worth watching. It's not brilliant,
but very solid.
The transfer is really nice to watch - being clean and sharp
- although the sound is not what it could have been and on
occasions you struggle to hear what is being said in a pretty
good script.
Conclusion: Movie 80%, Extras 20%
