High School Musical 2

Review by Anne Davis

Finally all those without access to the Disney channel on Foxtel can get excited - that's right, for the release of High School Musical 2 is here!

To follow up the original film (which broke just about every record in the book of records...which records records...that are recorded) the entire cast is back and all ready for summer!

High School Musical 2 : Extended Edition

Yep, this sequel is set over the high school summer break with loads of sunshine, singing and dancing to boot. Superstar in the making, Zac Efron, is clearly a triple threat ready to take musical theatre and film by storm. After scoring the lead in Hairspray he is back for fun in the sun with his basketball team and gorgeous girlfriend (who recently made quite the stir  thanks to some sexy pics which were leaked onto the net).

Hype and scandals aside, there is just no doubting that kids will whole heartedly love this movie every step of the way. For the exact same reasons a 25 year old male would hate it, kids under 18 (who am I kidding - even I own the album!) will adore this slick High School Musical sequel for the outrageous overacting, happy smiles, funk/ hip hop dance style and catchy tunes. Teens bordering on puberty will love it for the perve factor (...mmmm Zac Efron in a swimming pool...) and you get the added bonus of the moral at the end of the movie...that we are all in this together!

The film explores friendships and how we should treat each other when new exciting opportunities come along...like the chance at a sports scholarship for (Zac's character). There is some backstabbing, tears and drama-queen potential from blonde bimbo Charpee and some beautiful songs  - all written especially for the film (and the inevitable soundtrack and concert tour).

Although the same formula was used for the first film (and no doubt for the third, fourth, fifth - and eventual TV series) the marketing savy Disney delivers the goods for its tweenie-bopper audience with enough potential in the cast to make it bearable for parents to sit through a hundred times while their daughters learn how to 'do that move' and 'get the beat'.

Great fun, and very much deserving of all the hype - and I'm not afraid to admit it!

EXTRAS

This "Extended Edition" release (which was accompanied by a whirl wind promo tour by several of the films stars) is jam packed with bonus features. Disney sure know how to pamper their followers (if only companies who looked after less mainstream shows were as kind!).

This time around there are Bloopers, "Humuhumunukunukuapua'a" Exclusive Scene,  Music Videos (of course!), Sing Along with the Movie (I almost wear my DVD out using this feature), High School Karaoke and a fun look behind the scenes with a 'Rehearsal Cam'.

A great collection of extras which (if you listen closely) will be played non stop Christmas day.

Conclusion: Movie 80% Extras: 75%
