Details at a glance...

Independence Day
(1996)
20th Century Fox
114 minutes
PG

Director: Roland Emmerich.

Cast: Jeff Goldblum, Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Randy Quaid.

Format: Widescreen. Single-sided, dual-layer disc.

Language: English. Dolby Digital 5.1.

Subtitles: Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Portugueuse, Hebrew, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Icelandic, English for hearing impaired.

Extras: Documentaries on Creating Reality, the making of Independence Day, audio commentaries, Alternate Ending.

Comments: This is absolutely choc-a-bloc full of extras and any fan of the film, or of movie making in general, should sit down to have a good look at it. The pick of the extras are the short docos on how the movie was made, how certain shots were achieved and how the whole process was worked through. These are terrific and would score well by themselves. In addition you get design sketches, conceptual art, sets and props and storyboards. The alternate ending has Randy Quaid delivering the bomb in his beat-up ol' biplane, but it was felt that the humour would wreck the tension that had been built up. Unfortunately, the audio commentaries are nothing special.
