The Iron Giant is set in 1957 in the middle of the
Cold War when paranoia over the Communist menace was running
like wildfire through the Western world, and Americans checked
under their beds for Reds before saying their prayers.
It follows a young boy called Hogarth who discovers the crash-landed
giant in a forest near his home and, in a way that kids do
with toys (even massive ones), forms a relationship with it.
Only the robot is not just electronics and wires and its
artificial intelligence begins to learn about the Earth through
Hogarth and the couple become friends.
Just to ruin this idyll, a government agent arrives to hunt
down whatever crashed from space in the hope that it will
give the good old US of A a superweapon with which to destroy
the nasty Commies.
He will stop at nothing, nor fail to stoop low, to achieve
his aim - promotion and doing his bit to ensure that the Reds
won't win - even if it kills all Americans.
The Iron Giant is a terrific story with lots of different
layers that will appeal to both kids and adults, but it does
have parts that will scare littlies so you need to be watching
with them the first time through.
Its animations are just astounding and offer a strange, real-world
1950s style of animation that mixes almost perfectly with
the computer-generated robot.
This is a tale that will remain fresh through many sittings
and the voiceovers - from such names as Jennifier Aniston,
Harry Connick Jnr and Vin Diesel - together with superb direction
from Brad Bird bring this adventure to life.
Conclusion: Movie 85%, Extras 80%
