 Jamie's Great Italian Escape

Review by Madison Turner

He’s tackled school dinners, turned disadvantaged youths into qualified chefs and taught the British public the benefits of home cooked meals  - and now his doing something for himself!

In Jamie’s Italian Escape celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver, embarks on what is in his own words “a totally selfish journey”. In a bid to rediscover his love of cooking and to take a break from the business empire that is Jamie Oliver Inc. he takes time out to travel throughout Italy in the back of a kombi van learning from the locals.

This 6 part DVD is a must not only for fans of Jamie Oliver but for anyone with an interest in food. This scenic tour of Italy, from Sicily to Tuscany to the Amalfi coast, transports viewers into one of the world’s most beautiful countries. Jamie goes back to basics and learns the regional specialties from restaurant owners and the local nonnas who set the precedence for the best meals.

Jamies italian escape

Each of the 6 episodes sees Jamie in a new town and facing a new challenge. The locals unimpressed by Jamie’s celebrity status do not always appreciate his take on Italian cuisine. The big lesson learnt about Italian cooking is simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! Pick a flavor and a region and stick to it. The food that is cooked is beautiful, full of fresh ingredients and simple flavors. Jamie’s Italian Escape will most defiantly inspire all viewers to make the trip to this fabulous country. From experience I know that even with all the history, the beautiful scenery and the high fashion, the main thing that will stay with any visitor after the have left is the memory of the food.

This is Jamie at his most relaxed, free from the pressure of the restaurant and away from the prying eyes of the British paparazzi. He gets back to his love of food, drinking and interacting with the locals. Watch as he completes against the own towns nonnas in a pasta rolling competition, catches the local fish and hunts his own meat.

Be warned this involves watching wild boar be hunted and Jamie cutting the neck of a lamb, a task he struggles with. This may offend some viewers however as Jamie says if you want to eat meat you have to be prepared to se where it comes from. This all ties in with Jamies goal of educating the public about fresh ad healthy foods.

Overall this DVD while only short (6 episodes with no extra), is a great way to relax and take yourself on an overseas journey right from your lounge room. Be inspired to create delicious fresh dishes and take in a culture that not only has food as a necessity but celebrates it.

EXTRAS

There's nothing in the way of extras here - with only Jamie's adventure on offer to entice viewers. But it's a great bit of viewing, so I think we can safely reccomend this one.

Conclusion: Movie 80% Extras: N/A
