Japanese Story

Review by James Anthony

What happens when you throw a forthright, no-nonsense Aussie gal into a confined space with an uptight Japanese businessman and then get them to travel together in the vast outback areas of Western Australia?

Well, drama for one.

And a damn interesting movie for another.

The movie is Japanese Story and stars Toni Collette, as Sandy, and Gotaro Tsunashima as Hiromitsu. Sandy is a software expert but when her partner volunteers her to take Hiromitsu under her wing he mistakes her for just being a driver.

Needless to say our Sandy doesn't like the sexist chap from Japan and their relationship is cool beyond freezing point. He orders her around and demands to be taken way off the beaten track in the Pilbara where they proceed to get bogged and are forced to work together to stay alive.

This marks a turning point between the pair and they begin to recognize that they may have things in common that they would not have dreamt of the day before.

We'll say no more on the plot, but it is simple, yet gripping, and certainly comes out of left field.

The photography is utterly superb with bold stark colours and glorious landscapes. But despite the imagery it is the relationship between the pair that will grab you.

The video transfer is terrific and shows off the stunning camerawork. An excellent soundtrack is well back-up by a clean sound.

Conclusion: Movie 80% Extras 30%
