Jawbreaker

Review by James Anthony

Teenage girls - hate 'em, or really hate 'em. Vacuous, inane, moody and soooooo bitchy - and that's the nice ones.

But wait until you meet the teen femmes from Jawbreaker and you'll find they multiply the worst excesses by about a squillion.

The four queens of an American high school rule the place and hang it upon anyone who they don't think makes the grade - which is almost all the rest of their fellow students.

To celebrate an inner-circle birthday, three of the group decide to kidnap their pal and scare the living willies out of her.

Sounds good, but when the queen of queens, Courtenay, (Rose McGowan) inserts a gobstopper (jawbreaker) into the mouth of the victim before gagging her, things turn from sweet to very sour.

Deadly, in fact, as the poor lass swallows the large sweet and chokes to death on it.

The survivors then agree, albeit two reluctantly, to make it look as if the poor dear has died during an S&M session that has gone wrong.

Things hurtle downhill from there. Jawbreaker is definitely a teen movie - filled with a pounding soundtrack and some truly spunky women (the blokes are hunks but are very much bit players) - and anyone over the age of 18 will have trouble taking any of it seriously.

But, having said that, it is worth watching if only to see how the queen B gets her just desserts in the end.

Conclusion: Movie: 70%. Extras: 60%
