However, when it comes down to it, Kill Bill is done in such
a comic-strip way (both literally and figuratively) that you
tend to watch it with a smile rather than hiding your eyes
behind your fingers as another head flies thataway!
Kill Bill centres on The Bride (Uma Thurman) who is the only
survivor (and only just only) of a wedding massacre that leaves
her in a coma.
Coming to in a hospital she begins a long, bloody path to
get revenge against her one time employer Bill (David Carradine).
One of the problems The Bride (aka Kiddo) faces is that in
order to get Bill, she needs to fight her way through her
former colleagues all of whom are deadly assassins. They are
O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu), Vernita Green (Vivicia Fox), Elle
Driver (Darryl Hannah) and Budd (Michael Madsen).
Apart from being martial arts experts and very handy with
knives, the assassins all carry superlative Japanese swords
made by the master craftsman Hattori Hanzo.
That's pretty much all we can say about the plot without
giving too much away, although it is fair to say Kill Bill
(volume 1) has plenty of twists along the way.
The acting is superb. Each key player is magnificent and
my hat goes off to Thurman who carries the movie with apparent
ease. We would have said without raising a sweat but its rarely
stopped action would make that a lie.
The sword and fighting skills of all concerned are excellent
and wait until you catch a look at O-Ren Ishii's bodyguard's
weapon and what she does with it.
If you want a bit of unasked-for advice, this fellow suggests
you get a copy of both Kill Bill I and Kill Bill 2 and watch
them on the same night.
Conclusion: Movie 95% Extras 75%
