Before he can break off their relationship Dorrie, as Bud
calls her, announces she is pregnant. Faced with the prospect
of penniless parenthood Bud decides to remove his problem.
A Kiss Before Dying's director, Gerd Oswald, known
for television series 'Outer Limits' and 'Star Trek', uses
the Cinemascope frame with skill.
Lionel Newman's music sets the mood with jazzy orchestrations
by the doyens of Capitol Recording Studios, Nelson Riddle
and Billy May.
In their scenes together Mary Astor as a doting mother encourages
her son's driving ambition:
Bud: "Look mother I'm 25 years old. Where am
I? No place. I don't want to end up like dad with holes in
my shoes."
Mother: "Oh you're not like him, not at all.
You'll see, anything you decide to do, you'll do it, I know."
Bud: "Sure, I'm a genius."
Mother: "I think so."
Altough this film hasn't the tension of Pyscho the
acting is very good, in particular from Robert Wagner in possibly
his best perfomance as a cold calculating killer.
