This silly duffer made the mistake of suggesting that while
Lilo and Stitch was excellent, it wasn't quite as enjoyable
for adults as Ice Age (No.1 for JA) or Shrek
(No.2 for JA).
Well, you would have thought I'd just smashed the DVD player
... oh the wailing and gnashing of 7-year-old teeth. Even
the hurried explanation that those other movies had more adult
humour and references in them didn't calm the storm.
Anyway, having dug my grave I'm staying with it. So what's
the story with L&S? Well it goes like this ...
Stitch (voiced by Chris Sanders), or Experiment 626, is a
genetically created monster that is faster, stronger, nastier
and more deadly than anything else in the universe. His alien
creator Jumba (David Ogden Stiers) is jailed for his efforts
and while 626 should be put to death he is instead exiled.
Unfortunately for the Alien Council he proves too clever
and escapes on to Earth where he lands in the Hawaiian Islands
and is rescued by a troubled little girl called Lilo (Daveigh
Chase).
Now, Stitch as he is named, looks a little like a feral wombat
- and no it's not Grumpy - and worries the heck out of Lilo's
older sister Nani (Tia Carrere).
Nani is having a bad time of it after the deaths of their
parents and is struggling to keep social welfare officers
from taking Lilo off her. Lilo doesn't help by being a wilful,
stroppy (but sorta cute) little brute.
Stitch is a disaster and when Alien hunters descend upon
earth to capture him the girls' lives turn from disastrous
to ... disastrously disastrous.
Lilo and Stitch is a very funny and enjoyable Disney
offering - although with a serious side about ohana,
or being a family - that has beautiful animations, a devilishly
naughty Stitch, and one of the best soundtracks put down on
film.
It is Elvis Presley based and you can guarantee you'll be
humming or singing Devil in Disguise for weeks. Hawaiian-music
also plays a large part of the score and the beat of drums
will have your shoes tapping big time.
Conclusion: 90% Extras: 80%.
