Limbo

This tale of a small group of people from a fishing town in Alaska is at once completely absorbing and ultimately unsatisfying as a movie.

Slow-paced but engrossing, Limbo has you very quickly mixed up in the lives of a failed fisherman (David Strathairn), a struggling singer (Mary Elizabeth Mastrontanio) and her teenage daughter, and a host of characters that spill across the working lives in a small town.

It's an unlikely romance between the main stars but as you like the pair, you hope it works out for the best.

Strathairn's character is suddenly given the chance to restart his life as a fisherman and this tests his nerve as he had to give up the sea 20 years before when his boat foundered and two men drowned.

Rediscovering his love of the sea in some pretty sensational scenery, he invites the singer and daughter on a yacht trip with his brother, who is on a visit.

The pleasant weekend sail turns to chaos when his brother, who has double-crossed some hard drugs dealers, is murdered and the trio escape overboard only to be pursued by the killers.

They hide, survive and then have to face being left on the island as the harsh Alaskan winter begins to set in. There is some nice relationship repairing done between the two women and just as you begin to feel a rosy glow, the story comes to an uncharacteristically quick end.

Without giving away any more of the tale it is fair to say that the ending is a really annoying cop out. It's a shame, because having invested a couple of hours in the characters, viewers deserve more.

Conclusion: Movie: 80% DVD Extras: 65%
