The Lion King

It has taken a long time - too long, really, but finally the wonderful The Lion King has made it on to DVD.

It still gobsmacks me that it has taken 10 years for it to appear - but hey we still haven't seen Star Wars 4, 5, 6 although then the rumour is September for that trilogy.

Anyway, back to Disney's The Lion King. There is only one thing to say and that is utterly brilliant!

You can chuck out the ratty old videos of the movie now as the DVD is a must-buy.

The colours and images are just sensational - this is a perfect transfer - and the sound is glorious.

Clearly Disney has spent a lot of time on getting it right and have passed the quality test with colours flying.

As you would expect the story of The Lion King is the same - focussing on the young cub Simba (Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Matthew Broderick) and his disastrous recklessness.

He knows he is going to be the next King of the Beasts after his dad Mufasa (James Earl Jones) passes on, but that is too far away for the youngster to take anything seriously.

Unfortunately his jealous uncle Scar (juicily voiced by Jeremy Irons) has other plans and turns Simba's innocence into a murderous plot to rid himself of Mufasa.

Backed by a dribbling pack of wickedly dopey hyenas (led by Whoopi Goldberg), Scar carries off the perfect coup and it is only by extreme good luck that Simba manages to escape and run into exile.

There he meets the irrepressable pair of Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella) who take him under their care and teach him about the good things in life - bugs - and Hakuna Matata, that is not caring about anything.

Eventually Simba is forced to confront his destiny and returns to Pride Rock to battle it out with Scar for the role of King.

Now while The Lion King story is pretty much what you have on tape, DVD owners do get an entirely new song - the Morning Report sung by Zazu (Rowan Atkinson). This is a nice addition.

There is also a massive package of extras to check out on the second disc.

Thanks - at last - Disney, this is a fantastic DVD to have in the home collection.

Conclusion: 95% Extras: 90%
