Madagascar

Review by James Anthony

Okay, so the bleeding hearts have had their way and several inmates of the animal penitentiary known as New York Zoo have been released into the wild.

Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett-Smith), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock) and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) all tried to escape and so the folk of the Big Apple have bowed to their wishes and have sent them off to the wild.

Madagascar

Now all but Marty are very unhappy about the situation. He was having a mid-life crisis and needed change and when he escaped they followed to stop him and… well… they all lost their comfy homes in the zoo and now are on a container ship heading for Africa.

Tagging along are a feral bunch of penguins - more psychotic actually - who mean business and when we say mean, they are. They tunnel out as escapees, karate chop the poor ship crewmembers, commit piracy and other acts of wanton criminality. But they are so cute. Cute and cuddly, boys.

After a slight mishap, Alex, Gloria, Marty and Melman end up stranded on Madagascar where they have to adjust, very quickly, to not being pampered, manicured or fed by zoo staff. It isn't pretty.

Along the way they meet up with a charming tribe of lemurs and their wacky leader King Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen), all of whom face death at the hands of nasty little carnivore foosas.

I can't say what happens, but Madagascar is a huge amount of fun and laughter for the whole family.

There are exciting moments, terrifying ordeals, fighting against humungous odds and - of course - scenes of sheer brilliance. The lemur dance club scene is a hoot. Anything with King Julien will have you wetting yourself and then there is Melman...

He is one sorry giraffe - a hypochondriac in fact - but he gets the best animations and lines in the whole movie. His long legs and neck become hilarious vehicles for comedy and the faces he gets to pull are uproarious.

And then there are the penguins!!!

And you can tell that the cast had a great time. Chris Rock is excellent as Marty, Stiller is somewhat subdued (but still great) as Alex, Gloria's Pinkett-Smith is fine and Schwimmer's long-necked creature an absolute beauty. The computer animations are terrific and the video and sound transfers make this excellent viewing on a home theatre.

If you missed it at the movies give yourself a treat and check it out.
