Not only does there sparring add spice and humour, but when
they eventually recognise the fact they like each other the
friendship is both enjoyable and touching.
The characters also grow - very important in a series - and
I'll 'fess up to the fact that Magnum won me over during the
episode he is confronted by the guy who killed one of his
best friends, laughed at by said killer, and so young Thomas
kills him. It was so real, and so un-1980s goody-good American.
If you don't know, Magnum is an ex US Navy Seal and naval
officer who has taken up the job of private investigator.
His main job is to look after security at the estate of Robin
Masters, a writer who is never in the hallowed islands of
Hawaii.
He gets to drive a Ferrari and the battle between he and
Higgins is a joy to watch and laugh through.
In this DVD compilation you get to see the pilot of the series
and then some of the better (picked by the get-togetherers)
episodes.
They are:
Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii (Pilot Episode, 1980)
- 90 minutes - where Magnum has to investigate the death of
a close mate.
Memories are Forever - (Series 2, Episode 23, 1981)
- 93 minutes - Magnum is haunted by dreams of his dead wife
and then discovers she's alive and in danger.
Black on White (Series 3, Episode 46, 1982) - 46
minutes - Higgins and his past in the British army come to
the fore in this episode as members of his old regiment start
being killed off one by one. Could it have something to do
with his time in Kenya fighting the Mau Mau rebels?
Mac's Back (Series 5, Episode 87, 1984) - 46 minutes
- More seeing dead people for our hero in this episode as
he spies someone who looks very much like his old buddy Mac
- a guy killed by a bomb meant for Magnum. Watch out for Sharon
Stone as Magnum's ex-girlfriend.
The People vs. Orville Wright (Series 7, Episode 148,
1987) - 45 minutes - Rick is suspected of being involved in
the death of the infamous Hawaiian gangster Ice Pick and so
Magnum has to prove he's innocent.
It should be said here and now that if ever a TV series deserves
an entire collection made from it - then it is Magnum.
As Higgins would say "Oh my God, Magnum!"
Conclusion: 85%
