Ally McBeal (Season 1)

Now having spent most nights over the years hard at work over a computer keyboard, I missed the great rush of Ally McBealism that launched the series into TV legend.

Everyone used to yak about the episode the night before and from the shorts on the channel promos it looked a surreal programme.

Now, with the release of the first series on to DVD, available only through EzyDVD, I've been able to catch up on all the fun times in a Boston law firm.

Ally McBeal (Calista Flockhart) is ... well, from a chap's point of view ... neurotic and has a terrible habit of letting her emotions go feral on her. She's a great lawyer but, oh boy, is pretty crap at relationships.

And there are relationships to be had aplenty. Her old flame Billy (Gil Bellows) works for the firm, but he's married to a legal colleague Georgia (Courtney Thorne-Smith) and is supposedly off-limits. The bosses of the firm - Fish (Greg Germann) and Cage (Peter MacNicol) are different sorts of lads and pretty much seem to back up what all we non-lawyers tend to think about that profession.

So in between the court dramas and the love dramas there is a massive amount of quality comedy that won the series absolute bag-fulls of Emmy awards.

The transfer is very good, considering the television base of the show, and has a beautiful colour range. It isn't perfect, by any means, but there are very few glitches to horrify your eyes. The sound is spot on and the all-important dialogue is clear and easy to understand.

All up, a pretty good little package that McBeal fans will consider a must.
