Meet the Parents

Poor old Greg Focker (Ben Stiller). He loves a beautiful teacher (Teri Polo), is about to propose and then discovers it may be better accepted - by his potential in-laws - if he asks permission for his Pam's hand.

What starts off as a grand idea in Meet the Parents, turns into a weekend of hell that only we who have been in similar situations (twice) can truly appreciate.

Now, don't get the wrong idea. Meeting the in-laws-to-be can be a great experience, but Meet the Parents is a hilarious situation comedy where everything that can go wrong for our lad … does.

The stiff-backed, nothing-is-good-enough-for-my-girl Dad is played with sinister delight by Robert de Niro. He just so happens to be an ex-CIA agent and the incidents that occur as the suitor tries to win him over are at once painful, embarrassing and laugh inducing.

Take for example the champagne cork that flies off and destroys De Niro's mother's urn and then the family cat Mr Jinks uses it as kitty litter.

Or, forgetting the warning about flushing the downstairs loo and setting the septic tank on backyard-overflow mode.

Or giving his sister-in-law-to-be a black eye just before her wedding and setting the house on fire.

Mind you, being a male nurse - and having a surname like Focker - gives the other side plenty of ammunition for some very straight-played, funny lines.

The name, in particular, is played on nicely by the scriptwriter and adds to Focker's feeling of isolation and not being good enough.

Stiller is remarkably cool throughout his ordeal and copes exceedingly well - and patiently - with all that is thrown at him.

Personally, no one is worth what that silly Focker copped and so the advice from this quarter is that if you are ever asked to meet the parents - don't.

Say you have a headache, a broken back, have joined the foreign legion or (and this does work) claim to have developed a chronic nervous allergic reaction to sunlight that will render you incapable of going outside.

But, if you decide to take that fateful trip, then watch Meet the Parents beforehand and get yourself prepared! If you're not planning on getting married, then this highly recommended movie will keep you laughing at those who do!

Conclusion: Movie 85%
