Me, Myself and Irene

For most of his life, Charlie Baileygates - the nicest guy on the Rhode Island police force - has been looked on as a prat by the folk in his small town.

They take advantage of his good nature by making him park their cars, allow their kids to be mean to him and laugh at the fact that he and his white wife (who's left him for a brilliant, black dwarf) had beautiful black triplets. Hmmmm.

Still, despite all the hassles, Charlie is a really nice guy and a devoted dad to his loving boys. That is ... until one day he has had enough ... and a chronic case of Split Personality Disorder turns cheerful Charlie into horrible Hank, a cigarette smoking, boozing, super-aggressive, head-kicking, sex-aid loving nutter.

The physical transformation is toned down by Carrey and this not only makes it more palatable for not-usually-Carrey fans, but funnier.

It is impossible not to like Charlie, but almost as difficult to hate his alter-ego - who has appeared to defend himself from complete humiliation under Charlie's gentle approach to life.

Life starts to get difficult for our hero/s when he is asked to escort a young suspect (Renee Zellweger) interstate and finds that she is a target for crooked cops.

As you would expect, the story is a slightly off-centre variation on chase movies as the pair (or is that trio?) try to stay out of harm's way.

Adding to the good-guys line-up are Charlie's now grown-up sons - who are large fellows and brilliant (just like their dad). One of the funniest scenes of the movie is where they are trying to work out the diameter of an egg. Why? So they can see if it can be put it up the rear of a recalcitrant copper without breaking the shell. The follow up scene will have you wetting yourself!

Me, Myself and Irene is a no brainer that will have you laughing your way into Politically Correct hell, as every sacred cow is not only attacked, but milked for all it's worth.

The transfer to DVD is first-rate and while the sound lacks a little imaginative use, the images are crisp, clear and virtually free from artefacts and other problems.

Conclusion: Movie 85%, Extras 20%
