Midway

Review by James Anthony

The battle of Midway was one of those decisive military clashes that has a profound effect upon a war.

In this case it is World War Two and both the Americans and Japanese are circling each other trying to get an opening to launch a knock-out blow.

Old School

The Japanese have the advantage after the battle of the Coral Sea, and set their sights on Midway Island, where they hope to take America's main forward Pacific base.

On the US side, they know something is up, but the Pacific is a very large piece of water and the enemy could come at them from several angles.

The lead cast members are a Who's Who of Hollywood with the likes of Charlton Heston, Bob Mitchum, Henry Fonda, a wonderful Hal Holbrook as the code guru, right down to the likes of Tom Selleck as a sailor.

Midway is a solid war movie, but not a classic, and is likely to appeal more to those who like the cat-and-mouse strategic struggle of military minds.

The action scenes, which do include real footage of the battle and from the Pacific War, are exciting, as is the lead-up to the fleets finding each other.

Transfer-wise the video is excellent, with a few minor moans, and the sound clear and surprisingly good.

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras 60%
