Written
by and starring comedians Julian Barratt
and Noel Fielding, this third series takes the absurdity (and
in-joking) to an extreme level. With success comes creative freedom
(although, it must be said that even the first couple of series'
were fairly unrestrained) and it certainly shows with some truly odd -
yet hilarious - episodes that would be lucky to ever be see the light
of day on a commercial network.
Having already conquered the
Zoo and an apartment in the previous two series, this third lot of
adventures are based within the fictional world of Noel and Julian's
alter egos Vince Noir and Howard Moon. This time around they are
working in the 'Nabootique' (Shaman Naboo's second hand shop
in
Dalston). Trivia nerds might be aware that the second series takes
place in the apartment above
the Nabootique store - so it only seems sensible (or as sensible as
this show can be) that the shop front setting be the next logical step.
There are some cracker episodes included here, although perhaps not as
good as the first two series. That said, The Mighty Boosh is
the sort of show that grows on you with each gradual viewing - so in
six months times, I may very be claiming this to be "BEST BOOSH EVER!".
The third series of The
Mighty Boosh
is definitely one for the fans, with recurring jokes and characters
aplenty - so how newcomers might take to it remains a mystery. From the
return of The Spirit Of Jazz, to Crimping, to Bob Fossil - there is
little on offer that could actually be considered "new".
The
visuals are again spectacular, some truly creative minds have gone to
work in making this comedy series on par with truly great art (thanks
to back-projection screens, odd mini cartoons and character designs
that need to be seen to be believed).
A must have for any true
comedy fan, as this is probably the single most influential absurdist
comedy since Monty Python hit airwaves all those years ago.
DVD EXTRAS
As always, The Mighty Boosh
boys know what their audience wants - and they don't fail to deliver.
Much like the previous DVD releases, Series 3 is jam packed with
quality special features - all of which could quite happily be viewed
numerous times (a rarity when it comes to DVD Extras).
There is
an extensive behind the scenes featurette, as well as a bunch of
deleted and extended scenes. However, the real Highlights are the Boosh Press Tour
(which follows Julian Barrett and Noel Fielding on a whirl wind
adventure of radio and TV interviews... it really is a cool life they
lead) as well as a commercial for Royale Mint which doubles as a very
cool music film clip.
Probably the most comprehensive and worthwhile DVD full of extras to
hit shelves this year.
A must have.
Conclusion:
Movie 95% Extras: 70%
