Usually women in Maggie Gilkeson's situation turn to their
family for help, but she can't stand her father (Tommy Lee
Jones) who abandoned her mother to live with the Indians.
But when the old timer rides in to help get his grand-daughter
back, Maggie is in no position to oppose his offer and, together
with her youngest, they set out to track the kidnappers down.
The Missing has strong links to The Searchers, although it
is a far darker and gorier tale than that classic. There is
ancient mysticism and plenty of violence as the hunters close
in.
Jones character is unapologetic about what he has done in
his life - or even the way he has gone about it - and he is
tough enough to try to handle the Indian raiding party.
Cate Blanchett is just superb as the heroine Maggie Gilkeson.
She's independent and strong and yet you feel she has a need
to let someone else take over for a while just to give her
a rest.
Jones doesn't allow her to overshadow his understated performance
as her ornery old dad and the interplay between the two is
excellent as she works her hatred out of her system.
The images in The Missing are wonderful and the video transfer
is without fault.
Conclusion: 90% Extras: 20%.
