Hank Grotowoski is caught between two worlds. That of his
father's racist era - brilliantly and malevolently played
by Peter Boyle - and his son Sonny, who just so happens to
be a more liberally minded Heath Ledger.
Hank wanders through life with a blankness that is only removed
when he is working. And, despite his outward nastiness, you
can see that the guy has a heart under there somewhere.
His life is changed forever after he executes the convicted
killer Lawrence Musgrove (Sean Combs) and fate throws his
beliefs, feelings and prejudices to the winds.
Unknowingly he meets the killer's widow Leticia (Halle Berry)
and from there they form an unlikely relationship that changes
them both.
We won't go into the fine detail other than to say this is
an engaging and engrossing movie.
Of the main leads our hats go off to Billy Bob and Peter
Boyle, they are sensational. Ledger is a tad underwhelming
and while Berry is very good, it is hard to see why she won
an Oscar for this role.
The video transfer is superb and the sound is understated
and apt for the tone of the movie.
Conclusion: Movie 85% Extras 75%
