The Mothman Prophecies

There's nothing like a good spooky supernatural thriller to set the senses on edge and get your mind wondering just what strange forces there are in the world.

However, good is the operative word - as many of the supernatural movies that get released are B-grade (at best) and some shouldn't rate a Z.

You'll be pleased to know then that The Mothman Prophecies is one of the former and will have your head puzzling over just where the movie will end up taking you.

John Klein (Richard Gere) is a big-name journalist who is in love with his wife (Debra Messing), but suddenly finds himself alone when she dies suddenly.

After a couple of years of hard grieving his life begins to take a few bizarre turns when somehow he is drawn to a small West Virginian town.

He doesn't know how he got there, or why, but he finds out that people are seeing things. And not just meths-drinkers either, but 'good serious people' are reporting frightening sightings of a man-sized, moth-like creature.

The appearances have the good folk of Point Pleasant rattled and even senior cop Sgt Connie Parker (Laura Linney) is beginning to think that all is not well around the town.

Klein investigates the situation and despite his natural scepticism begins to think that maybe the sightings are warnings about something disastrous about to happen.

His fears deepen as he discovers more about the Mothman, a strange figure that has appeared around the world in places where tragedies strike soon afterwards.

The Mothman Prophecies is based upon real-life events and is a stylish thriller that will keep you intrigued.

Gere is excellent and so is Will Patton as an increasingly traumatised witness to the Mothman. Alan Bates, however, steals the show as an eccentric author.

The video transfer is very good and the sound also gets a big thumb's up.

The Mothman Prophecies is terrific viewing.

Conclusion: 85% Extras: 60%
