The Motorcycle Diaries

Review by James Anthony

The name Dr Ernesto Rafael Guevara de la Serna may not mean much to many people, but put him in a scruffy beard and beret and add his nickname Che then he should immediately come to mind.

A tee-shirt icon of socialist politics, Che Guevara (Gael Garcia Bernal ) helped Fidel Castro seize power in Cuba and before his death at the hands of Bolivian troops in 1967, the trained doctor had pushed the leftist cause throughout South America.

In "The Motorcycle Diaries", director Walter Salles takes us way back to when Che and his cousin Alberto Granado (Rodrigo De La Serna ) decided to leave their home in Argentina and head off around South America on a motorbike.

The Motorcycle Diaries

On their journey they had many adventures - many very funny, others moving - but above all they witnessed the terrible conditions people lived in and that sparked Guevara's fight for a more equal and fair deal for the common people.

Memorable chapters include a leper colony where the pair worked to help those suffering that dreadful disease, and they did so with courage and compassion.

And, it should be said, that as young fellows will they did have a lot of fun with the ladies on their travels including an incident with a drunken mechanic and his beautiful wife at a dance.

Hey, who said socialists are all boring creatures?

The acting is first class. Bernal is very, very good, but he is overshadowed by De La Serna's portrayal of his cousin. His performance is outstanding as the funny, larrikin cousin and it counterpoints Bernal's more serious, thoughtful role. The Motorcycle Diaries is an excellent film well worthy of the two hours it takes to watch and it should be said the time flies by.

The photography is superb and the video transfer excellent. How could a director go wrong with some truly stunning landscapes in Argentina, Chile and Peru with which to work?

Give it a go, you'll be pleased you took the chance.

Conclusion: Movie 90% Extras: 0%
