My Family : Series 3

Review by Sean Lynch

There are a lot of things the English know how to do well: brush teeth badly, food tastier than a boot, Katie Price and comedy.

But did anyone stop to think that, despite the number of hits (Monty Python, Are You Being Served, Blackadder, The Young Ones), there are an equal number of out and out duds? Because - they've churned out countless (we just aren't reminded of them as often as we are of the successes).

So where does My Family fit in?

My Family

While there's nothing particularly wrong with My Family, it's certainly in no danger of taking the crown of "Ground Breaking" from the likes of Ricky Gervais or The Mighty Boosh. And that's where the major problem lies here - it's just unbelievably... average.

By series three, the team behind My Family are pretty much on auto pilot. They know their roles, they know what they have to do - and there's a good chance that there is little left to mine from the "dysfunctional family" thing that hasn't already been used up by Everybody Loves Raymond. So - of course - the next step is going "quirky".

In this latest series, Janey has left for university and been replaced in the house by their cousin Abi (yep - the old sitcom cast switcheroo), who is more than a little accident prone! Ben sees this new addition to their home as a threat to the peace and quiet he’s wanted throughout his married life, while Susan is happy to have another woman in the house. As for Michael, he is spending as much time thinking about girls now as his school work! And as if all this wasn’t bad enough for Ben, Nick continues to work on his next hair-brained scheme, whether that means starring as Jesus in the local nativity play or dressing up as a drag queen!

While there are quite a few laughs on offer here, most fans of My Family will realise that it's starting to lose it's sheen. It happened with Men Behaving Badly, with several cast changes destroying it's initial appeal - but My Family is hardly comparable to a classic UK sitcom like that.

There's thirteen episodes here, all of which offer some welcome light relief - but hardly worthy of any real praise. But, hey, comedy is found by the viewers.

Perhaps you could have a marathon watching My Family and episodes of Two And A Half Men and According To Jim back to back...

EXTRAS

No extras here, which is slightly disappointing. After three seasons, surely there would have been time to throw together some sort of extras package!

Average show, so it only makes sense that the Extras on offer are fairly ordinary as well.

Conclusion: Movie 60% Extras: N/A
