Some people are just not meant to have easy or pleasant lives and Dave (Tim Robbins) is one such person.

He lives by the Mystic River in New England and plays with his mates Jimmy (Sean Penn) and Sean (Kevin Bacon) in the streets outside their houses.

Life is simple and easy until one day when something terrible happens out of the blue.

Mystic River

Twenty-five years later the trio meet again as adults and this time the tragedy is again all too real.

Jimmy, who has become a local heavy, has discovered his daughter is missing and his old friend Sean is there as part of the investigation. When her body is found Jimmy takes it upon himself to find out who did the deed and steamrolls ahead despite advice to leave it to the police.

Mystic River is a gripping drama about people under pressure, and who to trust and those not to.

The lead actors are simply outstanding - hence the Oscars for Penn, Robbins and Marcia Gay Harden. Laurence Fishburne plays a terrific role as the chief investigator and Bacon's understated performance is one of his best.

Mystic River is not a nice movie, it touches on very dark issues and at times is a little sickening.

However, it is an absorbing whodunnit tale where things are not necessarily as they seem.

A must-see.

Conclusion: Movie 90% Extras 70%
