Like
most Australians, I grew up with Neighbours
as not so much a television show as it was a birth right. There is all
that talk amongst Parliament about citizenship and being un-Australian,
but in my opinion we can make the process a lot quicker with a simple
question: Does Toadfish look better with or without a mullet?
For those living under a rock, Neighbours
is one of Australia's longest-running (and most loved/mocked)
Australian soap operas, following the lives and relationships of the
residents of Ramsay Street in the fictional Melbourne suburb of
Erinsborough. As is the case with these sorts of show, Neighbours explores
the romances, family problems, domestic squabbles and other key life
events affecting the various residents.
The crazy thing about Neighbours
is that, despite some of the worst acting and storylines ever to hit
television, it has spawned the careers of the likes of Kylie Minogue,
Jason Donavon, Delta Goodrem, Natalie Imbruglia, Holly Valance, Rahda
Mitchel, Guy Pearce and even Russel Crowe.
This superb
collection is packed with some of the most enjoyable slabs of nostalgia
you are ever likely to clap your peepers on. For me, Neighbours
brought back numerous memories. From getting up at 5am to watch repeats
on Channel 10 when I was an early rising Grade 3, to my teenage years
where imitated cries of "Harold! Haaaaaaaaaaaaaarold!" would incite
laughter, to the death of Dee and reminding everyone of the thought
"Well - Toady was pushing his luck anyway". The show has literally been
around for as long as I have...so of course every sentence is packed
with some form of memory.
Included on the three discs are some truly milestone moments in Neighbours folklore
including:
• The very first episode broadcast by Channel Seven
• First episode screened on Ten
• The Waterhole explodes
• Harold goes missing "Harold! Haaaaaaaaaarold!"
• Max and Stephanie’s wedding
• Dee and Toadie’s short lived honeymoon
And
that's just a taste. There's some great moments included - most of
which you won't even realised you've remembered until you're actually
watching.
Apparently there's a Volume 2 on the way... and I'll be first in line
to get it!
EXTRAS
There's
a few photo galleries - however, the big draw card here is the
extravagant and (now embarrassing) 1000th episode celebration.
Hosted
by Mark "I was the Rove of the early 90s" Mitchell, the 1000th episode
dinner celebration is unlike anything you will ever see again.
Literally...there isn't a chance in hell that a network would pour cash
into something this over the top.
It does make for some pretty entertaining viewing though, and it's a
lot of fun for Neighbours
fans - if only to see Craig McGlauchlin playing guitar with James
Morrison (remember that trumpet player that used to be on EVERYTHING!).
Unbeatable value!
