The hero of Finding Nemo is not the title character,
but rather his dad, who fights all his own fears as he tries
to find his son who has been captured by scuba divers and
taken into a dentist's aquarium.
Marlin (Albert Brooks) is a clown fish and a worry wart of
huge proportions and you can hardly blame him after his wife
and 399 of Nemo's sublings were killed by a barracuda.
His only thing in life is to make sure Nemo (Alexander Gould)
is never in danger again and this smothering turns his young
lad against him.
Once Nemo has been captured Marlin meets up with a forgetful
Blue Tang fish called Dory (Ellen de Generes) who sort of
helps him track Nemo down.
I have to say without the Dory character Finding Nemo could
be a little ordinary, but De Generes makes her the star of
the movie by a bazillion sea miles.
Having watched the movie at least six times now I still roar
with laughter at her antics (so do the kids) particularly
her short-term memory loss, her brush with jelly fish and
ability to speak whale. (I'm smiling as I picture the scenes.)
Along the way the pair meet some strange and wonderful creatures
such as Bruce the shark (Barry Humphries) and his reformed
cobbers, Crush the sea turtle and his fellow cool dudes, a
helpful whale and a nice pelican (Geoffrey Rush).
Nemo, meanwhile, is coping well in his fish tank with his
new found friends voiced by such actors as Willem Defoe and
Elizabeth Perkins, but is missing his dad horribly and faces
being given to the dentist's "fish killer" niece.
The story of Finding Nemo is sort of a warning to
both parents and children telling them not to either smother
their little ones, or else to not ignore the advice from those
who have experienced more.
It is, however, a massively enjoyable adventure that will
have you in stitches.
The animations are stunning - there is no other description
for it. The creatures are gorgeous and the underwater scenes
are like donning a face mask and tank and hopping over the
edge of a boat.
To back up the images the transfer is perfect and the sound
superb.
A must must-have.
Conclusion: 90% Extras: 80%.
