But, now that I think about it,
perhaps Danny Zucko isn't the only Hollywood character taking it's
audience on a magical ride of repetition and regurgiatation. Because
not only has Nightmare Before Christmas
been hitting American cinemas regularly for the past few years (whether
it be a straight up re-release or the 3D version) - but even Aussies
have been getting into the act with an over abundance of DVD releases.
Didn't
this only JUST get rereleased? And not only was it recently
re-released... but somehow it managed to fit the exact same number of
DVD extras onto one disc that this "Re-Re-Re-Release" is spreading over
two?
Sure
- this litte baby has itself a fancy 3D cover, which
I'm sure obsessed fans will love (the character of Jack Skellington is
a cult amongst goths), but does that mean you have to go to
no further with your efforts on the extras included front?
Apparently not, but I digress...
For those who have somehow missed out on seeing the film since it's first release back in the early 1990s, Nightmare follows Jack Skellington (the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town) who has become increasingly bored with the same old scare and scream routine.
In fact, this pumpkin headed ghoul longs to spread the joy of Christmas.
But his merry mission puts Santa in jeopardy and creates a nightmare for good little boys and girls everywhere!
It's
is a classic film - and a superb antidote to those sickly sweet
Christmas specials that devour our screens throughout November and
December each year. It is also the closest thing you will ever get to
being inside Tim Burton's head, because unlike his live action works,
the guy has total control over the visuals of the film and you can
really feel his deft imagination at play in every shot.
Well
worth investing in if you don't yet own a copy... but if you already
do, perhaps it's time to just be happy with what you have - after all,
isn't that what Christmas is all about? DVD EXTRAS
What are we really getting for our dollar bills?
Well, the flick has bee digitally restored and remastered with
state-of-the-art technology (again), with The Nightmare Before Christmas looking seemingly deeper, darker and more brilliant than ever - just as Tim Burton originally envisioned it.
That said, if you're going to buy yet another
version of the film - you might as well just upgrade to Blu Ray...
because, let's face it, Sony will eventually force you to jump on the
Blu Ray train anyways.
For newbies, there are some very cool
extras on here (it's a great one for film and animation students), the
most enjoyable being the short film Frankenweenie (which Burton has revealed will soon be made into a full length animated feature).
So, I'm guessing we should expect another re-release of The Nightmare Before Christmas upon the release of that film?
Conclusion:
Movie 80% Extras: 80%
