The Whole Nine Yards

Life, for downtrodden dentist Oz (Matthew Perry), is no picnic. In fact, it's pretty crappy.

But, while our good doctor may be down in the mouth he never gets cranky or mean - he's just an all-round nice guy.

His wife (Rosanna Arquette), however, is a horrid French Canadian (is that tautology?) who, together with her equally awful mother, hates Oz, likes his money, loves making his very existence a misery and wants him dead.

Enter Jimmy "the tulip" Tudeski (Bruce Willis), a mob hitman who has just got out of jail after five years, having blown the whistle on a Chicago mobster Lazlo Gogolak.

He's keeping a low profile and the suburbs of Montreal are the ideal place to keep out of the way of Lazlo's vengeful son Janni (Kevin Pollak).

As fate would have it, Tudeski moves in next door to Oz (and his evil harpy) and strikes up an immediate rapport with the likeable medico. Finding out her neighbour's former profession, Mrs Oz forces her hubby to dob him in to the mob, and then tells the killer what he's doing in the hope he'll end her marriage permanently.

What follows is a hugely enjoyable storyline with a series of twists, turns and laughs as the characters discover hidden aspects about each other as they go for revenge and to get their hands on $10 million.

The script from Mitchell Kapner is almost perfect and while you have a suspicion about where it's going you can never really be sure. The actors involved do superbly well and all will be proud to add this title to their CVs.

You expect Bruce Willis to always put in a good performance and with this brand of darkish humor he really excels.

Matthew Perry shows he is quite a comedic talent - the drippy Friends aside. Rosanna Arquette is brilliantly awful as the trollop wife, but is overshadowed by Amanda Peet's vivacious work as the dental assistant with a dark secret.

She really shines with an acting display that would steal all scenes from a less in-tune cast. But, the biggest surprise is just how well Natasha Henstridge performs.

The lady mixes Lauren Bacall with Grace Kelly, adds in her own touch of steel - tempered with fragility - and one huge helping of gorgeous. Like Perry, this is her best role to date.

While we are throwing around bouquets, the British director, Jonathan Lynn, deserves a huge amount of praise as you can see his comic touch steering the timing of the actors throughout the movie.

The Whole Nine Yards is a wonderful film and it deserves its place on the shelves of all discerning DVD lovers. The images are sharp, the colour spot-on and the audio, while a bit up and down, is generally pretty good.

Conclusion: Movie: 90% DVD Extras: 80%
