Neil Young: Friends & Relatives

There are few rocks musos who have survived what Neil Young has gone through and come out still able to talk - let alone put on excellent concerts.

The exceptionally hard life of a rock star has clearly had its effect upon Young, whose face is lined and ravaged and with a hair do that is very un-00ies. He doesn't exactly dress up for the occasion either, just sporting a black T-shirt, jeans and runners.

Still, the ageing arms can manage to cope with the strains of carrying his guitar and he still plays like a wonder. Vocally, hey … he's Neil Young, when did he ever have a voice that didn't sound like a cat being strangled.

On this DVD, Young puts on a flawless show that includes his excellent guitar work (don't forget the harmonica) and nice, amusing little asides.

The one where mic feedback squeals has him telling the audience he's had a special line put in to talk to his dad in Canada. A second squeal has him saying: "That's him now."

Powderfinger will always be one of my favourite Young songs and if everytime I hear "Look out Mama there's a white boat coming up the river" I go into a trance and start strumming an imaginary electric guitar as the images of America's south flood to mind.

Daddy Went Walking is a sensational bit of country that, to me, is the type of Young's music I like. Catchy, almost boppy, you can just see it being sung around a campfire or at a country dance.

Walk On is a great syncopated rendition of the classic, Harvest Moon is at its acoustic best, Tonight's the Night begins with an amazing piano intro from Young and then the vocals kick in with a bluesy accompaniment.

The transfer is really sharp and clear with dark, but atmospheric lighting. There are few highlight burn-outs and the close-in images have you thinking you are in row 2.

This DVD is not just for Neil Young fans, but anyone who may like to see a great rock performer showing his stuff.

Conclusion: 85%
