A corner shop in Doncaster is where ver-ver-vocally challenged Albert Arkwright (Ronnie Barker) resides.

He endeavours to extract the maximum price from his customers, pay the minimum wage to nephew shop assistant Granville (David Jason), and possess the assets of nurse Gladys Emmanuel (Lynda Baron) who lives across the street.

On this DVD are 6 x 30 minute programmes plus the pilot episode.

Ep.1 - Full Of Mysterious Promises
Ep.2 - A Mattress On Wheels
Ep.3 - A Nice Cosy Little Disease
Ep.4 - Beware Of The Dog
Ep.5 - Well Catered Funeral
Ep.6 - Apples And Self Service

If you belong in the politically correct file don't bother to watch this series. It's full of hetro-sexual references to the opposite sex, speculation on what would occur 'if only', and views of the female anatomy designed to trigger some good old jokes.

Ronnie Barker is at his brilliant best in the central role. You should dislike this character: mean, manipulative, dishonest, and lecherous; but you don't, he has a wicked sense of humour, and there's a bit of Albert Arkwright in all of us.

David Jason as Granville is perfect as the dissatisfied virginal bachelor. He's desperate to be upwardly mobile, but never makes it. Anything in skirts stimulates his excitement, although he does give a cold shoulder to lady pensioners.

Lynda Baron plays the part of nurse Gladys Emmanuel in character. She's well built, with her mind on the job, and avoids the grocer's wandering hand with dexterity. Her performance could well be the inspiration for the late Dick Emery's immortal line. 'You are naughty… But I like you!"

A word of caution: Don't watch the episodes in one session; there's a similarity in each of plot and dialogue. View them one at a time, after a frustrating day or after a heavy night of contemporary television. You'll go to bed in happier mood.

The stories are simple, the characters stereotypes, and the result … a popular series that lasted for over a decade.

Conclusion: 90% Extras: 85%.
